When Beth Deel asked me to create posters for the newly developed Rail-Walk Apartments in downtown Roanoke I knew I wanted all 16 posters to somehow be related to the building. So, I researched the building's history, former owners, the neighborhood, etc. and using combinations of the information I found put together posters for the main hallway of the building. This project was similar to many of the other projects I'd been a part of in Roanoke in the sense that it was a history of Roanoke...

Roanoke city put out a call to design six trash bins that were to be located in six locations around the city. My idea was to incorporate a bit of history about the neighborhood the bins were going to be located in, along with the geographic location of the bins with regards to other important points around the city. The city liked the idea and hired me. So, each bin has a photo from the neighborhood in which it is located, a bit of textual history and walking distance to other places around...

The Commodore Inn was a small diner off of Patterson Avenue in Roanoke that existed for about 60 years, 1940-2000. I never went inside the original diner but the place was always fascinating to me because of its neon sign and the fact my grandfather used to go there in the 40s and 50s. The neon sign was the coolest in the city but by the time I moved back in 2007 it was in bad shape. Councilman Ray Ferris gave me the sign in 2012, Rob Humphreys and John Johnson helped me to take it down, Jack...

For my first show in Roanoke I wanted to pull out all the tricks and create something totally ridiculous and crazy. I called it Philosophy INC Rebel Headquarters Sale because I felt that title captured what I wanted: A headquarters from which my revolution in Roanoke could be started. I had a desk, an invasion map, multiple kinds of antiquated technologies, music, projections, etc.Al things I like. I wanted a playful atmosphere combined with the idea that there was a new force in Roanoke...

Philosophy INC Probes the Taubman Brian Counihan of the Marginal Arts Festival asked me to put on a show at the Taubman Museum of Art in 2011. By then I'd been involved in Roanoke's art scene for about two years and probably knew the widest range of artists at that time as anyone in the city, from local painters to avant-guard performance artists. I tried to get just about everyone I knew involved in some way. By this time I felt that art should be about where you live and should be about...

I've taken hundreds of Big Shot photos over the years. I used the Big Shot at my Rebel Sale show in Roanoke to take a bunch of photos of Roanoke folks and I used it at my MAMMA show in Blacksburg. I Ioaned my collection to Roanoke College for an exhibit they had about Andy Warhol several years ago.

PROject proJECT took place twice downtown Roanoke. The first time it involved about 12 artists and the second time probably twice that. Essentially, they were two nights of projected and lighted art gathered around several city blocks downtown. Here's my initial inspiration: My brother and I always saw the Asteroids video game in Dorothy Gillespie’s mural on 2nd street in Roanoke. We’d discuss ways to attach the little asteroid ship in the middle of the mural with a few shots coming out of...

I was hired to document Roanoke on the Road back in 2010. The idea behind this was to take Betsy Bannan's paintings to Manhattan in a big tour bus and have a bunch of people involved in the tour create a circus atmosphere in the numerous locaions throughout the city where we got out. This was my introduction to a lot of people in Roanoke and was a really fun way to meet them - being driven around Manhattan in a comfortable bus, drinking liquor and hopping out here and there to create a...

During my time there we worked on a project called the Virginia Heights Project, organized by Pat, which was a lengthy study and reinvention of the neighborhood on Lake Formosa. It really took Virginia Heights, and Roanoke later on, for me to fully appreciate community and the possibilities of that idea as one of the few things you can hope for in this world.

Your Block was part of Roanoke's Arts in Parks project from 2014-2015. My original Your Block plan was to spend one day a week for a month meeting with people in neighborhoods throughout Roanoke and using this time to teach them how to research their neighborhoods and create unique histories of their neighborhoods. At the end of the month the history that the people in these neighborhoods created would be presented in a park in Roanoke.

Photographs from the Roanoke, Virginia Housing Authority 1965-1985. Many of these photos are related to urban renewal in Roanoke during those years.
